A Journey from Kensington to Canvas
Welcome to Spahn Artz! I’m John, the artist behind these vibrant and evocative creations. But before we dive into the world of colors and brushstrokes, let me share a bit about my life—a journey that shaped both my art and my perspective.
Roots in Kensington
Growing up on the gritty streets of Kensington(Philadelphia), I discovered beauty in unexpected places. Our small row home was a canvas waiting to be filled with stories. My family—my older brother, twin sister, mother, two of my five uncles, and my grandparents—provided the rich palette of experiences that now infuse my art.
School Days and Summers
Elkin Elementary and Conwell Magnet School were my sanctuaries. Amid textbooks and chalk dust, I secretly sketched in the margins, dreaming of distant landscapes. But it was the summers in the Pocono Mountains—Promised Land State Park—that truly ignited my creativity. My grandmother, a campground host, introduced me to the wonders of nature. The whisper of leaves, the rustle of wildlife—it all seeped into my soul.
From Uniforms to Canvas
At 19, I took a leap—joining the US Army. Basic training at Fort Leonard Wood toughened me up, but it was my role as a biomedical engineer that truly tested my mettle. Denver, with its crisp air and mountain vistas, became my temporary canvas. Yet, even amidst the oscilloscopes and X-Ray equipment, I yearned for the raw expression of art.
Operation Iraqi Freedom and Unexpected Signs
In 2003, I found myself in Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Amid the desert sands, I painted signs for my battalion—each stroke a distraction from my environment. When my deployment ended, I returned home to my four-month-old son, forever changed by the colors of conflict.
Settling Back in South Jersey
Life led me back to South Jersey, where I now raise three children and work for a major pharmaceutical company. But the artist within never rests. My studio—filled with memories of Kensington, the Poconos, and Army green—awaits my brush.
